BEWARE OF FRAUDULENT UNEMPLOYMENT CLAIMS

October 23, 2020

We recently became aware of residents receiving notification of being approved for unemployment benefits when they did not file for these benefits and the persons approved are not unemployed.

If you receive a letter like this, please report immediately to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity and begin monitoring your credit reports. It is believed this fraudulent activity is taking place across multiple states and you must report this through the state by either calling 1-800-342-9909 or https://floridajobs.org/.../report-reemployment...

This is a form of identity theft and most victims are unaware until an employer is contacted that a claim for benefits was filed or the victim receives an IRS statement of benefits.

Identity theft cases connected to fraudulent unemployment claims are really concerning because many victims do not notice until much later. Reporting suspicious activity quickly and monitoring credit reports can make a huge difference. Staying alert to small warning signs matters more than ever today. That kind of awareness and quick reaction is one reason I enjoy Slope Rider, a momentum-based arcade game where paying attention and adapting early helps avoid bigger mistakes later.
