On Tuesday deputies arrested Gilberto del Castillo Espana, 82, of Georgetown for capital felony sexual assault on a victim under 12 years old and resisting an officer without violence.
In May deputies received a call by parents of the victim due to possible child abuse by Espana. The father of the victim told deputies he was worried to contact law enforcement because his family was here illegally. The father told deputies he noticed the child was acting very differently and having nightmares.
The father told deputies the victim said Del Castillo Espana had touched the victim in an “Inappropriate place” and pointed to the groin area. The victim told investigators Del Castillo Espana threatened to kill the child’s parents if anything was said to them. The victim also told investigators Del Castillo Espana committed rape. Again afterwards, the victim told investigators Del Castillo Espana threatened to kill family members if the child spoke.
A warrant was issued for Del Castillo Espana’s arrest. Deputies located him at his residence in Georgetown. When deputies tried to arrest him, Del Castillo Espana attempted to resist. Del Castillo Espana was taken to the Putnam County Jail and is being held without bond.
Del Castillo Espana was retired from the Putnam County School district where he worked at ESOL coordinator from 2002 – 2015. Prior to that he worked in adult education providing classes for migrant workers beginning in 1998.
“I am unbelievably proud of this child for having the courage to speak up, despite the threats to family and the concern of being undocumented,” Sheriff H.D. ‘Gator’ DeLoach said. “I want to assure our community of our commitment to protecting victims of crimes. No child should endure this horrific crime and be afraid to speak. We are here to help anyone else who Del Castillo Espana has preyed upon due to his position of power and influence over those less fortunate.”
